Hello everyone
Tuesday morning about 6:00am we left Grand Marais, MI for Whitefish point, MI.
This is the Crisp Point Lighthouse about 12 NM West of Whitefish Bay.
We made good time, and got in about 2:30pm. Docked the boat and then we got to do some sight seeing. Whitefish Point has the oldest lighthouse that was built in 1849.
We were able to see it from the water and the land.
Whitefish Point is also where about 500 shipwrecks are located and one of them is the Edmond Fitzgerald. I had mentioned yesterday that I love lighthouses, well I am also enthralled with the big ore ships that travel on the great lakes, the Fitzgerald is my favorite of the ships. On our sight seeing trip we went to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. There we saw the bell that was recovered from the Fitzgerald. We heard of the lives & times of the past lighthouse keepers. It was a very interesting and fun day.
A great day with some very interesting sights.
They call Whitefish Bay the funnel for Lake Superior. That is one of the reasons for so many ships sinking. I did not realize so many of them had run into each other and collisions were as much the problem combined with a lot of fog as the severe weather.
Tomorrow we go through the Soo Locks. Hope to bring you the photo’s and story. Although we will be pretty busy at the lock.
Sorry we missed you in Munising. We really wanted to spend some time with our oldest, Alex. The next time we get to see her is during Thanksgiving week. I love all the photos of the lighthouses. I’ll keep reading and enjoying your photos.
